Twenty years ago, the central banks of the euro area launched the biggest monetary transition in history: the use of a single currency, the Euro.
On the morning of January 1, 2002, at the headquarters of Banco de Portugal, more than 500 people queued in line to exchange escudos for euros, but the process began long before D-Day. The production of euro banknotes started in July 1999 in 15 factories around Europe. One of them was the Portuguese VALORA. Banks and ATMs were stocked, retailers and the public were supplied with kits of the new banknotes and coins, and a large-scale public information campaign was carried out.
After 20 years and a few crises, the Euro stands as a pillar of stability and is widely recognized by the citizens of 19 European countries, who use it on a daily basis. “Our currency” is also the second most used currency worldwide.
