As a cradle of civilisations, the Mediterranean became a part of the identity of all the peoples that touched its shores.
In fact, these are the peoples who make the history of the sea in Antiquity. A history of communication and exchange of people, products, trade, and culture; but also of expansion, colonisation and war. For the sea that unites is also the sea that divides.
As is the sea, so is money: it breaks down barriers created by a kaleidoscope of identities, while simultaneously serving hundreds of different communities. In this regard, the central Mediterranean region was paradigmatic and that is where some of the most admirable coins in ancient history saw the light of day.
Taking Calouste Gulbenkian’s remarkable numismatic collection as a starting point, this exhibition shows how coins were used to imagine, build, and reinvent identity in the Central Mediterranean. The Greek colonisation and the war between the great powers in that region create the backdrop, not to mention the wider cultural horizon of the Greek world.
