UNDERSTANDING / O Banco de Portugal
The Money Museum, opened in April 2016 and distinguished in 2017 as “Best Museum of the Year” by the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM), received, in 2019, around 75,000 visitors, interested in knowing more about money, its history and evolution, in Portugal and in the world.
With a commitment to an ever-changing and constantly evolving program, the Money Museum addresses current issues related to the role of money in the lives of citizens. Knowing that not many people know the mission and functions of a central bank, the Money Museum presents a new interactive room: UNDERSTANDING.
The main objective of this new section of the Museum is, in an accessible way, to make known the main functions of Banco de Portugal and the impact that the activities carried out have on the lives of citizens.
The new room once again expands the scope of the activities of the Money Museum, after the Centre for Financial Education was inaugurated in 2019, where families, children and young people simulate real-life situations, which prepare them for make more informed choices about how they spend and how they save their money.
With the new thematic core Understanding, the Money Museum is now taking another step in this purpose of promoting economic literacy.
Among other topics, there is talk of the role of Banco de Portugal in European bodies, inflation and monetary policy, but also the circulation of money, payment systems, statistics and supervision. In an interactive and simplified way, by exploring this nucleus, visitors to the Museum will have a much clearer idea of the importance of a central bank in their daily lives.
Using real and up to date data, through a set of very diverse interactive activities - levers, cranks, buttons, touch screens -, the visitor can explore basic economic concepts and navigate through several layers of information, depending on their level of knowledge and their curiosity. In the end, you will be able to understand a little more about what Banco de Portugal does and how it impacts your life.
