Clone of Concert "The Metamorphoses of Ovid"
Concerts
Concert on the occasion of the closing of the exhibition on Greek numismatics from the Gulbenkian collection “Sea of Identities”.
At the end of the exhibition, the Money Museum offers a concert rarely performed in Portugal, "The Metamorphoses of Ovid", by the Austrian composer and violinist C. D. von Dittersdorf (1739-1799).
As a Latin author, Ovid was the most strongly connected to and familiar with Greek culture and, as such, he is one of its greatest heirs. More than a simple reference, "The Metamorphoses" is a new reading of Greek myths, to which the composer Dittersdorf offers a response, this time in the form of music.
In 1783, Dittersdorf sets on to compose 15 symphonies, an innovative project at the time, which would be accompanied by engravings representing the complete work of "The Metamorphoses". They would be performed three years later, in 1786. However, of the 15 initial symphonies, three were never written, another three were lost and, only recently, three more were discovered, in a reduced version. Therefore, only the first 6 symphonies have mainly been interpreted.
In this concert, they’ll be playing symphony no. 3 “The Transformation of Actaeon into a Deer” and symphony no. 4 “Andromeda's Rescue by Perseus”, one of the most dramatic and captivating pieces of the set.
